They are classified as hydro carbonic- containing chloride and sodium - carbonic, cold, and hypotonic, with relatively high boric acid content.
The captivating reputation of this place had realistic foundation, above all, in the proven effects of the alkaline-salty-iron content of its cold mineral waters, their springs coming to be named Main, Medical, Elizabeth, Hercules, Napoleon, Klara, Anna, and Colonnade. The varied chemical compositions and richness of the springs led to their being assigned different healing attributes. Only 4 miles away there lies a historical town of Bardejov, recently inscribed by the UNESCO in the List of the World Heritage.

Classic massageis one of the most popular massages. It is a collection of techniques that the masseur applies on the patients’ body. The masseur stimulates the skin and the muscles, uses deep tissue massage which results in the congestion of blood flow under the skin, leading to relaxation of muscles and releasing the tension that causes muscle stiffness. The stiffness of the back often causes pain not just locally. The classic massage is also very effective against weariness and stress that cause difficulties for us in our daily lives. It is absolutely enjoyable and belongs to the most effective massage types. | Reconditioning massageis a sub-category of classic massage. It is most frequently applied to people after a long-term illness or injury because of which a particular limb or part of the body has been subject to limited movement or paralysis. The same applies to patients who have spent a long time confined to bed or hospital where their body has stiffened and their muscles weakened. The masseur motivates and recovers muscles which will fill with blood and nutriments. It is also recommended for people who are chair borne, physically less talented or do very little physical activity. |
Sport massageis very popular and it is used to treat healthy people and active athletes. Elements of the classic massage are incorporated into sport massage, however their order and intensity is modified according to the purpose of the massage. This massage type is recommended for people exposed to higher physical endurance, leading a dynamic lifestyle and professional athletes. | Reflex massageThe essence of the reflex massage is derived from the techniques used in the classic massage. It has been improved thanks to our wider knowledge in the fields of neurophysiology. This is a new way of massaging during which the masseur touches the more sensitive parts of the skin, while using some elements of the classic massage. These parts are called reflex points. |
Manual lymphatic massageOne of the newest methods of physiotherapy is manual lymphatic massage. It is not just a therapeutic method applied to eliminate swellings that occur primarily and secondarily as a result of operations, inflammation and irradiation, but is a good way of reconditioning muscles too. Lymphatic massage is applied after greater strains, and is proven to be really effective in eliminating interstitial fluids full of exhausted metabolites produced in the muscles and nerves as well as in eliminating accumulated blood from minor veins. The amount of fluids in joint capsules will also be reduced. The results of manual lymphatic massage will be noticeable directly after the treatment, our limbs and whole body will feel light and move freely. | Chiropractic massageis a therapeutic method using manual adjustments of injured joints, connective tissues and muscles, mainly the spine and its effects on the nervous system. It combines a number of manipulative techniques based on the natural movements of particular body parts, which enable the reconditioning of joints as well as tendons that connect muscles to bones. |

The first written mention about the village was found in Spiš archive. The document is from 1245 called „terra fílií Thuka“ – it means the land of the son of Thuku. The village has been known like this since 1274. In 1427 the village belonged to the Putnok-Gemer county, it was the 13th village from 27 other villages. From 1565 until1711 the village was struck hard three times. During 1565 and 1682 it was burnt-out by the Turks and in 1711 after a plague epidemic there survived only two families in the village. After this period some new settlers from Muráň started to settle down and in 1785 the village had 408 inhabitants.
The Číž spa can be grateful for its origin after the accidental discovery of the iodine-bromine fountain in 1862 when a local citizen Harnócz Andráš bumped into salty water while digging his well, it was in a depth of8 metreson his estate. The first „patients“ who tried its healing effects, were the local citizens. They first started to use it for cooking and they started to give it to the animals as well as a substitution for salt. In1865 in Budapest some chemical analysis were carried out under the supervision of Dr. Karol Than. The analysis confirmed that the spring of the salty water contains some healing elements, mainly iodine and bromine which occur in the local mineral water only rarely. The first spring of the iodine water was named Themis (Goddess of the legal order). Artur Glos – a geologist and mining engineer from Číž got other two wells dug. In the depth of35 ma spring with salty water was found and it had a much higher content of iodine and bromine which are good for healing purpose – spring Hygiea, which has been used for drinking cure for more than 100 years. The third spring Neptún was used for baths together with the Themis spring.
In1888 aRimamurán company bought the estates and started to build the spa. All the participants built their own spa houses for the patients (Mária, Margita, Kamilla, Horváth, an Ilona), which disposed of 200 bed capacities altogether. There were built two military pensions which served for complete healing except for pulmonary tuberculosis. The spa it was divided into „lower“ so called clean and „upper“ for the patients with open wounds. The village Číž started to become rich as the poorer patients were accommodated during the summer in private houses. In the spa there was a lively spa life – the patients had a tennis court at their disposal as well music in the park with a brilliant violinist, dancing evenings, piano in the building of the management, daily fresh newspapers, rowing a boat and swimming in the Rimava, a post office, distant letter writing, a telephone, and a jewellery. The spa season lasted from 1st May until 30th September. Glos Artur was the first spa director. After him Dr. Szakall took over the management – the majority shareholder, thanks to him the spa was even more prosperous and as well the village started to thrive. During the winter months the employees were filling the dark bottles with Číž water and it was sent to the USA in bulks, 25 bottles per pack. As well the soaps manufactured with Číž water were very good, they were for curing acne and other different skin diseases. During the 1st Czechoslovak Republic ( in 1934) the Masaryk´s league established in Číž a sanatorium for children – the spa house Milan. The president´s daughter Alica Masaryková was cured here as well. The spa house Milan serves still for children from the age of 3 to18. M. Perthes and scoliosis are treated here with very good results. After the second world war the spa was nationalized and since 1956 it has had an all year operation. During 1975 – 80 a new spa house was built called Rimava with an indoor rehabilitation pool, physiotherapy, baths, surgeries and a canteen. Since 1996 the spa has been under the management of a joint stock company and this company rebuilt this spa almost completely – all the accommodation capacities were reconstructed, as well the spa park and in the area between the spa houses Rimava and Milan a Water World was built – a summer swimming pool with four pools.
The natural iodine spa Číž is the only one in Slovakia which uses natural mineral iodine-bromine water for healing.
Lack of iodine in the organism can cause thyroid disorders – goitre and hypothyroidism (physical and mental development disorders). Elementary iodine has an ability of sublimation and it contributes to creation of a rich iodine microclimate in the balneological operation and it allows an effective inhalation of the clients during their staying in an iodine environment. It interferes in the metabolism of lipid, sugar, protein with a direct effect and through thyroid hormones, it reduces the cholesterol concentration in the serum, and slows down the formation of arteriosclerosis. A swelling effect on the collagen and elastic structures of the vessel wall causes their vasodilation (widening), improves blood circulation, helps healing the wounds, is anti-inflammatory, softens the painful swellings in the synovial and ligamentous joint apparatus, decelerates the degenerative processes of the spine and joints. It has an antiseptic and disinfectant effect. Iodine increases the level of calcium in the blood and its stowing in the bones –it is used for osteoporosis, osteonecrosis, bone tuberculosis, for diseases of airways connected with production of thick phlegm – it dissolves phlegm and eases its expectoration. Well-known is its ant sclerotic and anti-inflammatory effect. Iodine accelerates the desorption of inflammatory exudates.
Iodine water has beneficial effects as well for treatment of sclerosis multiplex.
The mineral spring is an unusual and irreplaceable gift of the nature. For each country where it occurs, it has a huge medical, economic, social and historic significance. In this direction Slovakia is especially a lucky country because there are only a few countries which would have as various mineral springs on a small area. The natural healing water is microbiologically unobjectionable ground water which has proven healing effects for its chemical and physical features which can be used for prevention, healing and rehabilitation. In the meaning of the notion „ chemical quality“ we understand a dispersive physic-chemical system with concrete features and biological effects resulting from them. The chemical features (chemical quality) of natural healing and natural mineral water are the reflections of their chemical composition, resp. mineralization. As natural healing iodine water can be labelled a type of natural water which fulfils the following conditions:
With its healing effects and balneological values this water belongs to the rarest ones in Europe. The mineral water is abundant in salt, iodine and bromine which occur rarely in mineral waters. It belongs to salty ones and its origin is connected with the occurrence of oil fields. It is used for drinking cure. Three preserved certificates of the water quality certifies that the Číž water belongs to the world unique, one from Budapest (1896), one from Brussels (1987) and the most significant is from the world exhibition in St. Luis (the USA 1904).
Natural, healing, heavily mineralised, iodine-bromine, sodium-chlorine, hypotonic water with the temperature of 14°C and pH 7,3. It is hygienically unobjectionable with an increased content of lithium and bromine. The total mineralization of the water is 11 318 mg/l.
It is a really highly mineralized , chlorine, sodium, ferrous water with an increased content of boron and lithium. The water is cold, weakly alkaline, hypertonic. The temperature of the water is11,9 °Cand pH 7,48. The total mineralization of the water is 30 019 mg/l. The content of iodide is 93,75 mg/l and magnesium 322 mg/l. It is used only for outer balneotherapy.
In 2010 The Natural Iodine spa in Číž achieved another very perspective source of natural mineral water, well BČ3. With its features it fulfils the parameters of natural water. There were carried out some hydrodynamic tests on the BČ3 well , its purpose was to verify the substantiality of geothermal waters. On the basis of the implemented monitoring analysis of the geothermal water from the well BČ 3 it is a medium up to heavily mineralized carbon, hydrogen sulphide water of Ca-Mg-HCO3 type, with a substantiality of 2,66l/s and water temperature of31,8 °C. The mineralization of the water is 4826 mg/l. Nowadays the iodine water from the Hygiea well is filled and sold as a nasal spray for prevention from non-inflammatory diseases of upper respiratory airways.
Bešeňová is a small village situated in the centre of the region Liptov, which is very attractive with regard to tourism, 10 km from the town Ružomberok and 20 m from the town Liptovský Mikuláš. It spreads in length of one kilometre along the longest Slovak river Váh. Bešeňová is known especially thanks to geothermal springs which achieve temperature almost 70°C. There is the Thermal Park Bešeňová with thermal pools, which has many whirlpools, massage jets, toboggans, saunas, restaurants and many other attractions. Its thermal water has favourable effects on movement and respiratory system, urology problems, it has good cosmetic effects and thank to lithium it has a positive impact on psyche.
